A federal judge has allowed parts of a copyright lawsuit to proceed against a social media company, handing them a blow as they face allegations of facilitating unauthorized use of artists’ music. The lawsuit claims that the social media company gave paying subscribers more leeway to share copyrighted music illegally. It also accuses the company of delaying responses to copyright infringement notices and not taking enough action against repeat offenders. The judge allowed these claims to proceed, stating that if proven, they could show the company knowingly facilitated infringement. However, claims that the company directly stole artists’ intellectual property were dismissed. Music publishers cited over 1,700 songs allegedly infringed by the company.
